Original watercolour of a Lapwing at its nest, feigning injury, drawing an intruder away from its eggs. Originally commissioned by The Game Conservancy, I painted this composition in June 1980. It was shown at the launch of my book, ‘Game Birds’, written by Charles Coles and illustrated by myself, at The King Street Galleries, St. James’s, London between September 25th and October 9th, 1981. It was intended to be one of the 24 large commissioned paintings for the book, but was later withdrawn when another bird was substituted instead. This painting has remained in my personal collection ever since. The ‘one lost Game Bird’, as it were.
